Sandur Polytechnic was established in 1988 and is managed by Shivapur Shikshana Samiti, Sandur which was founded in 1965 by Late Dr. M.Y.Ghorpade, former Minister for Rural Development & Panchayat Raj, Govt. of Karnataka to cater to educational needs of Sandur and the neighbouring areas. The Polytechnic is supported by the Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores Ltd, (SMIORE), Sandur.
Sandur polytechnic is recognized by the Govt. of Karnataka and All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and administrated by a Governing Council comprising representatives of Shivapur Shikshana Samiti, Department of Technical Education, AICTE and Industries/educationists/technologists in the region.

Scholarships and Gold Medals
- Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Ltd (SMIORE) has instituted fifteen
Golden Jubilee Scholarships. One scholarship per class is awarded on a merit-cum-means basis.
- Sandur Manganese and Iron Ores Ltd has also instituted Gold Medals for state rank holders and toppers in the final year.
- The annual Smt. Mahalakshmi Freeship is given to one student for a diploma in his or her selected discipline, on a merit-cum-means basis.
